Juneteenth Celebration

Details: Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, nearly three years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Mission The Iowa Juneteenth Observance is an annual grassroots program of the Connect Foundation, which is a state network of community volunteers dedicated to improve cross-cultural relations through education and positive cultural interaction. The mission of the Iowa Juneteenth Observance is to: 1) commemorate the end to slavery; 2) highlight the economic, political, and social progress of African-Americans following slavery; and 3) reach out to all Iowans in a mutual celebration of freedom.

Details: Saturday, July 31st will be a day of action in cities across Iowa where supporters like yourself will join together and stand up for Iowa. Volunteers will be speaking to their neighbors about our Democratic candidates. We are holding a big canvassing event to counter the efforts of the Republicans. Our Day of Action will take place at the Clinton County Democratic Headquarters and will be broken up into two shifts with phone calling shifts beginning at 10:30 and 2:30 then canvassing shifts beginning at 11:00am and 3:00pm.
